Being part of the “upper school” has many privileges and responsibilities for students at Anakie State School .
As well as our normal school curriculum we have a Business Enterprise that involves keeping free range chooks for egg production. Making good use of recycled shredded paper for their laying boxes and nests, is part of our whole school recycling program. The class are also the proud owners of four ducks, including a Watervale laying pair that recently won Grand Champion Waterfowl at Emerald Agricultural Show, and a male Indian Runner, affectionately known as Donald, who won the title of Champion Junior Waterfowl .
Another part of our enterprise involves raising money through the sale of Slush Drinks. This has helped to finance school camps and allowed the Student Council to donate money to causes such as the Red Cross. Each year, the Student Council takes part in the Jeans For Genes Day Fundraising events also.
The events that everyone looks forward to the most are our camps. Year Seven get to breakaway from the rest of the class for three days to learn about themselves and the meaning of “leadership” in the great environment of Camp Fairbairn Outdoor Education Centre. Navigation, canoeing, rock climbing, cooking, astronomy, team challenges, it’s a busy three days. We also have a bigger biannual camp that includes the whole class. In 2007 we flew to Brisbane for a week and had a wonderful time looking at how a city functions.
The Year Seven class take parade every Monday and help run fun events like our Easter Hat Parade. We are also a Reef Guardian School, so monitoring our local lake for water quality and signs of healthy animal and plant life are also part of our biannual plan. Concerts, Eisteddfod, Choir, Sports, it seems amazing that we’ve got time to do lessons at all!
